Start sculpting, go on and never stop

 Hi, Josh here.

In order to have satisfaction in anything you make, you need results. Inspiration is important, but so is to maintain motivation, resilience and to give things a proper conclusion; and so is with sculpting.

These are my two resent figures, Rias and Schwi, which are finished, painted and displayed with my other figures.

Tutorial: Making your own figures - Preforming

Hi, Josh here.

Sculpting anime figures is a fun and satisfying experience for me. Many times I hear from my peers how they would like to be as "talented" as me to produce a piece or two they would like to have of a character they like which might or not have a commercial figure available for purchase.

Nevertheless, as with many things, I think talent just plays like 10% of being able to make your figures; the remaining being in the lines of 20% research, 20% interest, 20% dedication (i.e. trial and error), 20% patience and 10% money.

One of the first things I hear people want to know about is the proportions and how to get them right. I have no doubt people understand proportions better than others, and they will be able to come up with the right ones by just going with the flow from the start by getting a small section done and they grow the other ones attached to it and so.

However, I'm more of a "I have to see the whole body first" to get the feel it it is right or not. Just as with drawing, I usually build the "skeleton" of my subject by doing the basic shapes stuff I see many people might overlook because they would like to focus on one part first (like the face, or head) and then as they progress they realize the head is too large or too small compared to the rest or the body, or the hands or too big or small, or the legs are too long or short; especially if you want to make a specific character. This is why personally my very first step in drawing or sculpting would be to do what I like to call a "preform".

One Year Later...

Hi, Josh here.

It has been over a year since I started this Rias Gremory figure from my last post http://metarealia.blogspot.com/2017/04/how-much-clay-do-you-need-to-make-18th.html and I have finally I got some improvement.

How much clay do you need to make a 1/8th Scale Figure

Hi, Josh here.

As the title implies, I have asked a couple of times "How much material is usually needed to make a 1/8th Scale Figure?"

Well, the answer for that might actually depend on how complex such a figure might be. However, if we where to talk about a 1/8th 1.72m tall (21.5cm) busty onee-san bishoujo figure like Rias Gremory (Oh, and with her wings of course) in a skimpy swimsuit (and maybe a straw hat on her head), I would say that one block of Paper Clay would be more than enough and probably you'll just use a little bit more than half a block.
Rias Gremory, for reference. Not the actual pose and swimsuit intended for the figure.

I'm currently (and slowly) working on this one, with no due date to completion. But here is a photo for size comparison with a F.A.Girl (so you may understand in I'm also working currently), :)

A word about sculpting

Hi, Josh here. Maybe one of the main reasons I decided to revive the blog (besides incredible amounts of boredom) came recently due to a another blog I read in My Figure Collection; a site where you could actually boast about how deep you have gone into the rabbit hole (I kinda love the term). The blog had the purpose of asking information about what materials are best for sculpting, and suddenly I felt the need to explain.

Blog Auto-sage

Hi, Josh here. It’s been a while, I know. My hiatus could be mostly attributed to a combination of finishing my studying period abroad, moving back to my country, looking for a job, and working. However, during this time some things remain the same; some have change. It is curious how life is full of paradigms; and, as you grow, some things start to change, you start liking some things, and you start disliking some other things, etc., etc.

[Work-In-Progress] IS (Infinite Stratos): Shinonono Houki

Hi, Josh here.

Yeah, I have been inactive for almost a year, let's change that. Here is my newest (for not saying my first) WIP of a complete full-scratch figure. This time the subject is Shinonono Houki from the recently released and finished show Infinite Stratos (IS).
